What is CONSENSUS-BASED DECISION MAKING in context of Move Move Collaborative?

Consensus-Based Decision Making (CBDM) is the process through which we develop our performances(s). It is our way of honoring all the voices present for decision making. It has the radical potential to be fully democratic, in a way that the majority rules process does not allow. In order to move forward, everyone has to allow each decision to proceed, sometimes letting go of personal investments in the direction of the work.

CBDM is a living structure, which allows participants to create new work that would not be possible in an individual capacity.

When we are in the Consensus-Based Decision Making process, these things are present:

  • Everyone gets the opportunity to voice their ideas, opinions, perspectives without interruption.

  • There is a flexibility in how we function depending on where we are in the process and who is present.

  • Ratifications to the development of the performance are offered with statements such as, “I propose”, “Please consider”, etc…

  • Individuals are responsible for their emotions during the process… sometimes this means individuals must let go of ideas, opinions, perspectives for the sake of the process moving forward.

  • When necessary, individual offerings are timed to allow for equitable airtime

  • All participants entering into this process consent to structural elements and to remaining flexible.

  • Active listening is essential to the process.
